RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)
The RCIA is not a PROGRAM. Nor is it a course in Catholicism. It is, rather, a gradual PROCESS within the community of the faithful which has a two-fold purpose.
1) First , the RCIA PROCESS is for any individual who is interested in learning more about the Catholic Church, and who may ( but sometimes may not) choose to enter the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The PROCESS is one of Inner conversion and therefore can take six months to six years, or longer, depending on the Individual's journey with God.
2) Second, the RCIA PROCESS is for the Parish Community. The RCIA Document states: "The People of God, as represented by the local Church, should understand and show by their concern that the initiation of adults (and children) is the responsibility of all the baptized. Therefore, the community must be fully prepared to give help to those who are searching for Christ. Hence, the entire community must help the candidates and catechumens throughout the process of initiation."
Not only do we as a parish community have this responsibility, but as those who journey with our candidates and catechumens, we will find that our faith lives are enriched and "re-awakened by this experience.
