Marriage

"The Church attaches great importance to Jesus' presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ's presence" (CCC, no. 1613).

Technically, a priest or a deacon does not "marry" the wedding couple: they marry each other and the priest or deacon serves as the official witness of the Church. The liturgical celebration of the union of a man and wife can be scheduled for one of two ceremonies: a full Mass with the exchange of vows, which is celebrated by a priest; or, the "exchange of vows" ceremony which can be celebrated by a Deacon.

Parishioners wishing to be married at Sacred Heart need to contact Fr. John Lyons or Deacon Bob Larcher at least 12 months prior to their planned date. They will then meet with one of the ministers to begin their marriage preparation program.

People who are not members of Sacred Heart but wish to be married in Savannah (as a "destination wedding") must prepare ALL of their paperwork with their pastor in their home parish.

Marriage

God created man and woman out of love and commanded them to imitate his love in their relations with each other. Man and woman were created for each other…Woman and man are equal in human dignity, and in marriage both are united in an unbreakable bond. (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, Ch. 21, p. 279)
